Discipline, focus, preparation, and years of experience resulted in a first place trophy at the Caterpillar Global Operator Challenge Finals at CONEXPO-CON/AGG 2026 for Milton CAT customer Brian Hayden on Tuesday, March 3 in Las Vegas, NV.
Hayden, of Wells, ME, was one of nine finalists from around the world to make it to the final round of the competition, powering through local qualifiers and semi-finals to get there. Brian represented the United States in the finals and competed against challengers from across the Americas, Europe, and Asia.
Each challenge tested operators' skills such as speed, precision handling, finesse and blade control in a 938 wheel loader, a 320 excavator and a Centennial-edition D4 dozer. Hayden started out strong, and his performance only improved as the competition went on.
Challenge #1 - Ace of Loaders (938 Wheel Loader): Operators test speed and control by loading a truck with the correct payload, switching to forks, transporting a pipe, all while navigating a narrow obstacle course while also having to knock dice off of small cones. Smooth tool transitions were key to this challenge.
Challenge #2 - Street Gambler (320 Excavator): This urban-inspired challenge showcases the finesse and power of excavator operators as they tackle a series of precision tasks. The challenge included picking up a corrugated tube and placing it inside a slightly larger tube, picking up and placing a manhole cover, and dumping the highest payload into an articulated truck in three passes.
Challenge #3 - Centennial Push (D4 Dozer): This dozer challenge combined a tire push through a tight obstacle course, fine grading, and blade control.
Brian Hayden took first place in both the Street Gambler and Centennial Push challenges, ultimately bringing home the win and being crowned the world's most skilled operator.
“This started with me throwing my hat in the ring to see how I would do. I just kept progressing and now we’re here. I won the Global Operator Challenge. I can’t even put into words how I’m feeling,” he said.
