Growing a One-Person Operation with Job Site Technology

Mitchell Makowski Inc., a one-person Naples, NY, general excavation operation, is embracing machine technology to enhance productivity and stay competitive. Mitchell depends on his CAT Next Gen equipment and SITECH machine control technology from Trimble to help him complete every job precisely and efficiently.

Caterpillar’s compatibility with Trimble technology drew Mitchell to Milton CAT and SITECH Northeast. Mitchell explained, “Hiring people is a big challenge for many people in our industry, including myself. Any equipment I can purchase that will allow me to work without having employees is an absolute must for me.”

Caterpillar and SITECH machine control technology is a game-changer

In 2019, Mitchell purchased a Next Gen 308 mini excavator and equipped it with a Trimble 2D MS975 system. In April, he attended our Batavia Grade Expectations event, where he demoed the Next Gen dozers with Trimble Earthworks systems and a CTL with a Smart Grader Blade, and a 3D Trimble GPS system. The grader blade’s precise slope control and ease of operation impressed Mitchell and led him to purchase a 289D3 CTL with a GB125 grader blade. “The Smart Attachments are the best thing CAT has ever made. Its ability to automatically follow a specific slope is a huge time saver for me,” Mitchell added.

Mitchell outfitted his 289D3 with a 3D machine control system and upgraded his 2D system to 3D. “The upgrade from 2D to 3D was almost seamless. I had one problem, but SITECH responded immediately. All the guys from SITECH Northeast are great. They are the best. They helped me every step of the way. Jason Passarell came down on a Sunday morning and solved the problem,” he praised.

Twenty years ago, Mitchell entered the excavation industry inadvertently when he was working in the corporate world and managing several rental properties. While maintaining the properties with a small machine by himself, Mitchell discovered his passion for hands-on work and began taking on clients.
